AFGM DMV Chapter

The National Capital Region portion of the Washington Metropolitan Area is also colloquially known by the abbreviation “DMV” which stands for the “District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia.” The area in the region that is surrounded by Interstate 495 referred to as being “Inside the Beltway”.

According to Census Bureau data, residents of Washington, D.C. speak at least 168 different languages. The city also houses more than 175 embassies and international cultural centers.

The Washington metropolitan area has ranked as the highest-educated metropolitan area in the nation for four decades. As of the 2006–2008 American Community Survey, the three most educated places with 200,000 people or more in Washington–Arlington–Alexandria by bachelor’s degree attainment (population 25 and over) are Arlington, Virginia (68.0%), Fairfax County, Virginia (58.8%), and Montgomery County, Maryland (56.4%). Forbes magazine stated in its 2008 “America’s Best- And Worst-Educated Cities” report: “The D.C. area is less than half the size of L.A., but both cities have around 100,000 Ph.D.’s.”

OUR WORK

We believe that it is our responsibility as men to support our local community. We have several activities and events that we sponsor throughout the year.

  • AFGM Virtual 5K Walk/Run – This event takes place from October 1 through October 31 to promote a healthy lifestyle. All proceeds from this event goes to the management of AFGM and to assist other nonprofit organizations in our area.
  • Healthy snacks for the homeless – AFGM answered a need from Northern Virginia Family Services to provide healthy bagged snacks for children who are living in homeless shelters in Virginia.
  • AFGM Food Drive – In December 2020 we launched a food drive to assist local food banks whose resources have been depleted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • AFGM Shoe Drive – Each year in March through April AFGM will host a shoe drive to support developing countries around the world.
  • AFGM After-School mentoring – In 2021 we began after-school mentoring sessions at elementary school to mentor at-risk boys.
  • AFGM Career day – We will sponsor a career day at several schools bringing in professionals from several different professions to educate the kids on various career paths.
  • AFGM Food Basket Giveaway– We will sponsor a few specific families to give away a food basket during the holiday season.
  • AFGM Scholarship – Our scholarship is for all AFGM and prospective AFGM mentees. Who are planning to attend college or trade school.
